COURSE 2
|
Designing for the Hesitant |
24th June – 30th June
|
The Course - For all those not confidant enough to try their hand at designing. Starting with a favourite picture, postcard or photo, you will design your own block for a very personal piece of work, that can be turned into a
wallhanging, throw, cushion or used as starting point for a larger item, such as bed quilt. Techniques for making up the block, colour choices and fabrics will be discussed, as well as finishing and quilting. Drawing skills are not necessary – just a desire to ‘have a go’ and be surprised by the results!
Skill level: Not suitable for beginners.

|

|
BRIGITTE STENTZEL
|
The Course – This is an exquisite form of quilting unique to Provence. On Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday all techniques required for you to create your own piece of work will be covered, including the history, construction, the significance of the symbols; how to start, finish off and stuff the cordings, borders, choosing suitable fabrics, and how to baste. Advice on specialist suppliers and book references will also be given. Each student will work on her own boutis 50 cm x 50cm. Cotton batiste will be supplied at 5€ per person and one ball of boutis cotton at 4€ per person. Thursday & Friday will be devoted to learning on a floor frame how to quilt in all directions without turning your work, as this professional technique can also be used for boutis. Thimbles will be supplied and can be purchased at the end of the week.

| JAN HASSARD
|
| Scintillating Strata |
27th May – 2nd June |
The Course - Jan will be teaching two inspirational strata techniques during the course. The first, called Strips Galore, results in exciting, colourful geometric designs. Jan won a Judge's Choice at Quilts UK for her quilt. The second technique moves on to Dazzling Diamonds. This has colours travelling in different directions throughout the design. Jan also won the British Quilter's Guild Award for Colour for this quilt. Although the two techniques work well together, the final results are very different and a lot will be achieved in the week. Jan's classes are always fun with a good work ethic. Students will go home with two quilt tops and lots of design ideas, plus tips on how to achieve dynamic art quilts.
Skill level: all levels, with some experience in machine piecing

| The Puzzle Quilt: Simple Blocks, Complex Fabrics |
3rd – 9th June |
The Course - A Puzzle Quilt is a sampler with a secret: each block design is used twice. Using totally different fabric combinations creates the illusion that each block is unique. The “puzzle” is to pick out which blocks are the same.
This is a good workshop for the quilter who wants to embrace the potential offered by a wide range of fabric choices rather than be overwhelmed by it. The class focus is on design, specifically learning to use fabric to create unexpected results, not technique.

| Scrap Happy Patchwork |
10th – 16th June |
The Course she is teaching at La Maison du Patchwork will be a lovely adventure for beginners or more experienced patchworkers alike. Maggie says, ‘I aim to teach you how to be confident and happy in your colour choices, how to put colour and texture and patterns together without anxiety – this is what I find worries students most. Combine this with quick and accurate methods of working with scraps and little pieces of fabric, and you should go home with several lovely and unique pieces. We will play with lots of traditional ideas such as nine-patch, log cabin, stars etc, and we will bring them alive with amazing fabric choices and colours.’

TED STORM-VAN-WEELDEN

|
The Course –
Traditionally, Trapunto was done after a quilt was finished. The back of
the quilt was slashed in areas where extra stuffing was desired and
then the slashes were closed with hand-stitching.
However, this destructive approach will not be taught; we
will not cut slashes on the reverse of a beautiful quilt! In this
course we will focus on three different Trapunto techniques: padded
quilting, corded quilting and stuffed quilting. You will have a
great time in practising these techniques in various blocks and
experience how different materials affect the look of your work.
Skill Level: The course is not suitable for hand quilting beginners; post beginners to advanced quilters with an affection for handwork are all welcome.

EDWINA MACKINNON

|
| Kaleidoscopic Colour |
15th – 21st July |
The Course – Learn how to produce amazing lengths of dyed cloth using simple techniques. We will then cut the cloth and use it as inspiration to design a stunning wallhanging with a traditional kaleidoscope block, creating swirls of colour accentuated by the quilting stitch. The finished size of the piece depends on how adventurous you are feeling! This is a really exciting way to experiment with colour.
Skill Level: From beginner to advanced. All levels can be catered for.

PAT ARCHIBALD

|
| Traveller’s Tales |
22nd – 28th July |
The Course – As quilters we will look at colour and how we can use it to create an atmosphere and mood of a particular place that you have visited. We will start with small colour exercises in fabric (these can become finished framed pieces). From there we can start on a larger piece that will have an ‘atmospheric strata’ as a background on which a glimpse of your chosen landscape will be superimposed. Enhance the mood of the piece with quilting and hand embellishment.

| PASCALE BEBRONNE |
| The Art of Distortion |
29th July – 4th August |
The Course – The theory and principles of distortion will be explained in order that each student fully understands and will be able to create her own design and apply the required distortion. A photocopier will be used to divide the pattern into segments or strips in order to facilitate the method of paper foundation piecing. Fabrics will be colour coded in order to be able to easily make up a piece of work from these distorted images. The course is based on Margaret J. Miller’s book, Block Bender Quilts
Skill Level: Not for beginners.

MARY BIRD

|
|

| Fabric manipulation techniques using hand dyed fabrics |
26th August – 1st September |
The Course - Monday will be a lovely day spent dyeing a range of multi- coloured fabrics using fibre reactive dyes. Tuesday and Wednesday will be spent practising fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating, slashing,
fraying, gathering and folding. Mary will then help you to design and make an item such as a textured bag, or a cushion cover . The combination of fabric dyeing and fabric manipulation is great fun and you should take home a special piece of work as well as a range of inspirational samples.

This is the subject of our workshop. What a program! While working on the page concept, you will learn several techniques such as appliqué, photo transfers, several embroidery stitches and the basics of free-motion machine embroidery. You will also play with several surface design techniques (stamps, beading, foiling, silk paper, making Tyvek elements…)
